They did not pass the crash tests
An investigation revealed that these models already sold on a large scale have not passed crash tests, they are loose cannons.
It’s not all rosy in the automotive industry, and in recent days the whole world is learning this the hard way. There are some car manufacturers that end up in the crosshairs of investigations and controls more often than others, others that work completely legally but are less appreciated from the point of view of reliability.
Usually the Japanese car manufacturers I am safe from these difficulties. As is now common knowledge, the world of work in Japan is central to society and also invades citizens’ private spaces and times. It is given absolute priority, and this is why Japanese products are considered truly reliable.
Companies from the Land of the Rising Sun are rarely the subject of scandals, but what has just hit the Japanese motor industry is truly enormous and will have tremendous effects on the entire world. One of the most widespread car manufacturers – and the oldest in Japan – is in the eye of the storm for having rigged crash test results on some models.
The investigation, led by an independent group and published on Bloomberg, detected this criticality and started a domino effect in the ranks of the company in question and beyond. Public safety would be at risk on all roads where at least one marked vehicle circulates Daihatsu, Toyota, Subaru o Mazda.
Missed crash tests at Daihatsu factories
The Daihatsu is a Japanese car manufacturer that also operates in factories outside the archipelago. The places where these critical issues were detected are in fact factories between Thailand and Malaysia, facilities where not only cars for Daihatsu are packaged.
In fact, this brand is currently 100% part of the Toyota group and also works for the aforementioned Subaru, Mazda and Toyota, obviously. The investigation, for now, has found that they were Ben’s side collision crash tests were rigged 88 thousand cars. Toyota, consequently, revealed that there are 64 critical models and that these present a total of 174 irregularities.
Daihatsu Copen
The offending models
Daihatsu immediately blocked shipments and the car manufacturers in question began checks and reorganization of their internal structure. It also seems that suspicious activities began as early as 1989 as the fast-paced deadlines prevented those responsible from carrying out satisfactory tests.
Among the problematic models we find Toyota Town Ace, Toyota Pixis Joy, Mazda Bongo and the Daihatsu Copen, Mira e:S and Move Canbus. Luckily, Among all the cars that will be recalled, there is no model sold in Europe, effectively making this scandal just a news event for us. As for Daihatsu and Toyota, the consequences are still to be defined.
