Japanese avant-garde composer Ichiyanagi died

The composer, who was married to Yoko Ono prior to her marriage to John Lennon, died on Friday. The foundation has not released her cause of death.

Ichiyanagi studied at the Juilliard School in New York and became a pioneer of modern Japanese experimental music, combining elements and instruments of traditional Japanese music with electronic music in free compositional techniques.

One of his best known works for orchestra is the provocative “Berlin Renshi” symphony.

In 2013 he wrote the Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra and in 2016 the Sixth Piano Concerto, which Ichiyanagi himself performed alone at a festival in Tokyo.

The family is organizing a private funeral, but according to Japanese media, Ichiyanagi’s son is preparing a public ceremony in honor of the composer’s works.
