Japanese Artist Ichiko Aoba Wins Anchor Award at Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg

Hamburg (dpa) – The Japanese Ichiko Aoba won the Anchor Award of the Reeperbahn Festival for talented newcomers in Hamburg. “Pop music is constantly changing. We experience music that makes us self-confident and moves us to tears,” said British-American music producer Tony Visconti about the winner on Saturday evening at the St. Pauli Theater.

This year, in addition to the award, the first place winner received tour equipment worth 20,000 euros for the first time. With her minimalist show and calm sounds, the Japanese artist prevailed against international competition from Sweden, Germany, Great Britain and the USA. The jury convinced the 33-year-old with her charisma and special way of creating pop.

In addition to Ichiko Aoba, musicians and bands Berq, Daisy the Great, Hannes, Paris Paloma and Waterbaby were nominated. They gave concerts in advance at the Reeperbahn Festival, which were attended by the jurors. “It’s an inspiration for your own music,” summed up the American singer Banks, who was also on the jury. In addition to her, Tony Visconti, British singer Katie Melua and songwriter and producer Tayla Parx from the USA were also represented this year.

The Anchor Award is considered a stepping stone to the international stage and an annual opportunity for artists to introduce themselves to a broad audience and the music industry. The award show heralded the end of the festival. Since Wednesday, more than 300 concerts with around 320 acts from around 40 countries have thrilled visitors to the Reeperbahn.
