From now on, there will be many days of snow and rain on the Sea of Japan side of northern Japan and Hokuriku. On Saturday the 13th, the winter-like atmospheric pressure pattern will strengthen, leading to rough weather from Hokuriku to the north on the Sea of Japan side, and there is a risk of heavy snowfall. Also, from the 15th (Monday) to the 16th (Tuesday), strong cold air will move southward again. We need to be on guard against heavy snow and blizzards, especially on the Sea of Japan side of northern Japan.

13th (Sat): First day of common university entrance test. There is a risk of rough weather mainly in northern Japan and Hokuriku.

A low pressure system will pass over northern Japan on the 12th (Friday). Snow is expected to fall on the Sea of Japan side of northern Japan, and rain is likely to fall in Hokuriku.

On Saturday the 13th, there will be a winter-like atmospheric pressure pattern. Strong cold air will flow into the sky, causing widespread snow and rain, especially in northern Japan, Hokuriku, and other areas facing the Sea of Japan. Depending on the strength of the cold air, snowfall may increase. The wind will be strong and the weather will be rough.
Saturday the 13th is also the first day of the common university entrance test. Transportation may be affected. Candidates from northern Japan and Hokuriku should take all possible precautions against the cold and give themselves plenty of time. On the other hand, the Pacific side is likely to have many sunny and dry days.

15th (Monday) – 16th (Tuesday) Strong cold air moving south, heavy snow and blizzard on the Sea of Japan side, snow clouds also flowing on the Pacific side.

From the 14th (Sunday) to the 15th (Monday), a low pressure system will develop as it passes through northern Japan.

The low pressure system is expected to further develop on the 16th (Tuesday), and the winter-like pressure pattern is expected to continue around Japan. As strong cold air moves southward again, snow and rain will fall mainly on the Sea of Japan coast from Hokkaido to the San’in area. There is a risk of heavy snow or blizzard. In areas that experienced strong shaking due to the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, please be careful of houses collapsing due to the weight of snow. Due to the strong cold air, there will be places where snow clouds will flow in, even on the Pacific side.

On Wednesday the 17th, the area around Honshu will be gradually covered by high pressure, so it will likely be sunny in many places. However, it will start raining in Kyushu due to the influence of the front.

It will continue to be cold like winter

It will be bitterly cold, with maximum temperatures in many places at or below normal.
Hokkaido has many midwinter days (with maximum temperatures below 0℃), and the air is likely to get cold from Tohoku to Kyushu.
In Kanazawa, the temperature will be 4℃ on the 13th (Saturday), 15th (Monday), and 16th (Tuesday), making it extremely cold. It may be difficult to stay warm in earthquake-affected areas, but please move your body as much as possible and be careful of hypothermia.
Even on the sunny Pacific side, there will be many places where the temperature will not reach 10℃ on the 16th (Tuesday). A cold north wind is blowing, making it feel even colder.

What should I be careful about during heavy snowfall in a short period of time?

① If snow removal from the roads cannot keep up, there is a risk that cars will become stuck or become stuck. Particularly on national roads and expressways with heavy traffic, large-scale gridlock may occur and it may take a long time to recover. When driving on snowy roads, it’s a good idea to have a shovel for snow removal, warm clothes, blankets, etc. in your car just in case.

② You also need to be careful about snow falling from the roof. When a large amount of snow accumulates on your roof, the weight of the snow can cause it to slide off all at once. In particular, when working in front of eaves, you need to be careful and check the situation above your head.

③ When snow accumulates in roadside gutters, drainage becomes poor and roads may become flooded. Especially in areas with a lot of snow, water from snow pipes tends to collect on roads, so be careful.

In addition, train schedules may be significantly disrupted. Planned suspensions may be announced in advance, so be sure to check traffic information frequently before heavy snowfall.
