After Japan lost to Iraq, predictions for ‘early final’ Japan vs South Korea in the top 16 Asian Cup had surfaced. Now the chances of this duel are running low again.
Japan, as the team with the highest ranking in the FIFA rankings, was seeded to win Group D, while South Korea was seeded to win Group E. When Japan lost to Iraq, the opportunity to win Group D was closed.
If Japan is runner up in Group D, they are at risk of meeting South Korea. This is what then made predictions and forecasts that Japan would meet Korea start to emerge.
However, then the chances of a duel which could be called the ‘early final’ again became scarce with the results in group E. South Korea drew against Jordan with a score of 2-2.
South Korea was only able to score a second goal to equalize in injury time. Now, South Korea is in second place with a collection of four points, losing on goal difference to Jordan who is in first place.
If in the last match, South Korea and Jordan win with the same score, Jordan will automatically win group E. South Korea can only win the group if they beat Malaysia with a score that is much more crushing than Jordan’s victory over Bahrain.
South Korea could also win the group if they win against Malaysia, while in the other match, Jordan cannot beat Bahrain.
Japan itself has not fully secured runner-up status in Group D. Japan will compete for second place status in Group D against the Indonesian National Team in the last match, Wednesday (24/1).
