As was already clear after the pandemic and the late opening of the country, in Japan there is no general commitment to receive visitors. It is no secret that its tolerance levels for mass tourism are far below what is normal in other parts of the world and the depreciation of the yen with the increase in travelers is causing problems in the country .
The clearest example is in the town of Fujikawaguchiko where, literally, it is tired of being one of those trendy places on Instagram and getting thousands of people every day who just want to repeat the same picture -statement: iconic Lawson chain store with a stunning view of Mount Fuji in the background.
Solution? Raise a wall 2.5 meters high and 20 meters long to block views from this part of the city. They don’t go around in Japan. “It is unfortunate that we have to do this because some tourists do not know how to respect the rules,” said city authorities, as quoted in The Keeper.
The trash they leave behind, they detail, and the traffic problems they cause when they stand in the middle of the street to take their happy picture are among some of the mis- tourist convenience in this quiet Japanese town, we suppose. They also report that visitors park where they shouldn’t and even climb on the roofs to get another view.
It remains to be seen if they will take the risk of building that wall which, apparently, could be a metal mesh fence that will prevent the intrepid Instagramers from taking a photo like the one that has been taken by thousands of people already. Although it may seem like a terrible measure, the authorities say that they have tried to solve the problem in the past with signs and even traffic agents, but it is impossible to control the load -trips
A situation that could, in fact, be a reminder of what is being shown again in many other tourist places on the planet, which encounter socio-economic and ecological problems to stand to tourist pressure. In fact, The Guardian does not hesitate to link this response from Japan to the protests in recent days in the Canary Islands to demand control of tourism.
