Japan’s Suga Yoshihide Cabinet approval rating is rapidly falling. Amid negative evaluations of the response to the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19), local media responded that even the minimum approval rating for maintaining the regime is at stake.

The Mainichi Shimbun conducted a telephone poll on the 16th in collaboration with the Social Research and Research Center, and the Suga cabinet approval rate was 33%, down 7 percentage points from the previous poll on December 12 last year.

Compared to the survey (64%) right after the Suga cabinet was launched in September last year, the approval rate fell by 31 percentage points.
In this poll, the percentage of respondents saying’I do not support’ was 57%, up 8 percentage points from the previous poll.

The number of respondents was 1079 men and women over the age of 18, including 711 mobile phones and 368 landlines.
In a poll conducted by Jiji News on the 8th and 11th, the Suga cabinet approval rate was 34.2%, down 8.9 percentage points compared to the last month’s survey.

The cause of the sharp decline in approval ratings is the opinion that dissatisfaction with the Corona 19 countermeasures is dominant. In this Mainichi poll, 71% of the Japanese government said it was “late” to the emergency declaration issued by the Japanese government in response to the spread of Corona 19.

The Suga cabinet’s countermeasures against Corona 19 were also negatively evaluated by 66%. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s approval rating also fell 5 percentage points from 33% last month to 28% this month.

According to the Mainichi Newspaper on the 17th, the Liberal Democratic Party’s executive assessed that the Suga Cabinet approval rating is “a risky level if the 30% line is broken.” As the Suga cabinet approval rating, which had been marching high in the 60-70% range at the beginning of its inauguration, plummeted to 30% in four months, the sense of crisis within the ruling party is increasing.

An experienced LDP minister, Mainichi said, citing Prime Minister Suga’s recent mistake and pointed out that “there is the public’s doubts about the Prime Minister’s leadership.”
