Japan has relaxed arms export regulations and decided to export its surface-to-air missile, Patriot, to the United States.
While the United States, which suffered a shortage of Patriot inventory due to its support for Ukraine, welcomed it, China expressed discomfort, telling it to respect the concerns of neighboring countries.

Japan announced that it would export the ‘Patriot’ surface-to-air missile operated by the Self-Defense Forces to the United States.
To this end, we will begin full-scale coordination with the United States early next year.

Previously, Japan relaxed the ‘three principles of transfer of defense equipment’ that regulate arms exports.
The Ministry of Defense stated that there was a request from the United States, which was experiencing a shortage of domestic stocks due to support for Ukraine.
U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan welcomed this decision, saying it will contribute to Japan’s security and peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
President Joe Biden also emphasized that he highly values and supports the leadership shown by Japan.
This decision is interpreted as a ‘gift’ given to Prime Minister Kishida ahead of his state visit to the United States in March next year.
In particular, the Kishida cabinet’s approval rating has fallen to the 10% range due to the controversy over political slush funds within the Liberal Democratic Party, putting the situation at a precipice.
For this reason, it is expected that Prime Minister Kishida will seek to turn the tide by making the first state visit to the United States by a Japanese leader in nine years.
However, China put a check on Japan’s action, telling it to respect the concerns of neighboring countries.
