Japan promises to send additional ships with liquefied natural gas (lng) to Europe. The US and the European Union have asked for this. Earlier in the day, there was a meeting with the US and EU ambassadors in Tokyo.
The additional loads are expected to arrive in March. The country does make a reservation: first it must be established that it does not need the gas itself, says Industry minister Haquida. In addition, Japan sends lng ships that did not yet have a final destination to Europe.
Nothing has been said about the amount of additional lng, except that it will be more than what the ships that Japan has already sent to Europe have on board. They are expected this month.
Less supply
Europe is facing an imminent gas shortage, partly due to the reduced supply from Russia. If the conflict around Ukraine gets out of control, supplies from Russia may be further disrupted.
In recent months, the price that customers want to pay in Europe has increased. Therefore double in January, European imports of lng compared to those in January last year. Ships en route to Asia turned around, because in Europe a better price was paid. In addition, more ships left the United States for Europe than usual.
