“Japan on High Alert as Russian Reconnaissance Planes Detected Near Coastline Amid G-7 Summit”

Japanese fighter jets were put on alert after the detection of two Russian reconnaissance planes near the country’s coastline, in the Pacific Ocean and in the Sea of Japan, the Japanese General Staff said in a brief statement quoted by AFP.

The incident is not the first of its kind. It happened a few days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky participated in the G-7 summit in Hiroshima, where all members of the group confirmed their support for his country against the Russian invasion, BTA writes. It was there that the delivery of F-16 fighter jets from the West of Ukraine was discussed.

The decisions of the G-7 are aimed at containing Russia and China, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reacted, world agencies reported during the meeting, which was hosted by Japan. Beijing also expressed its strong displeasure with the G7 communique on China. The document made several accusations against Beijing in relation to the South China Sea, human rights and alleged Chinese interference in the internal affairs of other countries.

Just a day ago, Japan handed over 100 pieces of military transport equipment, including trucks, to Ukraine at an official ceremony.

At the same time, for the time being, Japan does not plan to join NATO and has not made a decision to open a representative office of the North Atlantic Alliance in the country, TASS reported, quoting a speech by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to the members of the Japanese Parliament.

Kishida emphasized that Japan has no plans to become either an associate member of NATO or a permanent one.
