Japan plans to start vaccination against the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19) for the general public starting in May.

Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun quoted multiple government officials on the 19th, and reported that the general public, who are not eligible for priority vaccination, will be vaccinated against Corona 19 as early as May.

Those under the age of 16 who lack clinical trial data will be excluded, and the Japanese government aims to end vaccinations to the majority of the population by July.

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare’s vaccination plan, Japan will begin vaccination with the highest priority for about 10,000 medical workers treating corona19 patients from the end of next month.

Next, the targets for vaccination will be expanded in the order of general medical workers, the elderly over 65 years old, and those with underlying diseases. The plan is to complete the vaccination of more than 50 million people eligible for this priority vaccination in April.

After that, Japan will start general public vaccination in May, looking at the situation of securing the vaccine.

However, exceptions are made for those under the age of 16 for the time being, and it is a policy to review whether or not to add targets at the stage where safety has been confirmed, such as in the US or Europe.

Yomiuri added that the Japanese government’s target vaccination plan could be delayed depending on future preparations.
