Japan Meteorological Agency Warns of Periodic Cold Waves and High Temps for Coldest Season

1 month Coldest season Trend of high temperatures and little snow Warning of periodic cold waves

January 11, 2024 16:37

The Japan Meteorological Agency announced the forecast for the next month on the 11th. Although this is the time of the year when the coldest temperatures hit, we are unlikely to be affected by cold air in the future, and temperatures across the country tend to be higher than normal. In some places in western Japan, temperatures will be much higher than normal. The amount of snowfall is expected to be lower than normal on the Sea of Japan side of western Japan, and it is expected to be at or below normal in Hokuriku.

“Kanouchi” is the coldest time of the year. Be careful of the high temperature trend as well.

Today, the 11th (Thursday), the Japan Meteorological Agency announced the forecast for the next month. The period is from Saturday, January 13th to Monday, February 12th.

January 20th (Saturday) will be the “Great Cold”, which is considered to be the coldest period of the year. This period, from January 6th (Saturday) “Kokan” to February 3rd (Saturday) “Setsubun”, is called “Kanchu” or “Kan no Uchi”, which is the coldest period of the year.

Although this is usually the coldest period of the year, conditions will continue to be less susceptible to the effects of cold air, and temperatures across the country will likely be higher than normal.
In western Japan, temperatures are expected to be quite high in some places during the first half of the period, and today, Thursday, the 11th, “early weather information regarding high temperatures” was announced for northern Kyushu, southern Kyushu, and the Okinawa/Amami region. Temperatures may become “significantly higher” than normal in the Okinawa region from around the 17th (Wednesday), and in the Amami region, southern Kyushu, and northern Kyushu from around the 18th (Thursday). Care must be taken when managing crops that are sensitive to high temperatures.

Temperatures tend to be high throughout the month, but as the cold air moves south, it becomes colder than usual, so the temperature difference is large and can be hard for the body.

Just into next week, strong cold air will periodically move south into Japan, causing temperatures to be at or below normal, especially in northern Japan. It looks like the freezing cold will continue in the areas affected by the 2020 Noto Peninsula Earthquake. It may be difficult as supplies are not readily available, but please stay as warm as possible and stay in a safe place.

Nationwide, from the end of January to the beginning of February, people will be more susceptible to the effects of cold air, and it will be colder than usual. After a series of relatively high temperatures for this time of year, it’s going to be bitterly cold, so it’s hard for the body to bear. In the disaster-stricken areas, as the evacuation period continues to drag on, people will still need to be careful about hypothermia.

Northern Japan and Hokuriku Precipitation and sunshine hours are at normal levels

From now on, precipitation and sunshine hours will be at normal levels in northern Japan and Hokuriku.
On the other hand, the Pacific side of western and eastern Japan, which is less susceptible to the effects of low-pressure systems, is expected to see rainfall at or below normal and sunshine hours at or above normal.

The Kanto region is also expected to have relatively sunny days, but this is the time when it will be more susceptible to the effects of the south coast low pressure system. This is the time when a low pressure system passes through the south of Kanto or strong cold air moves southward, making it easier to snow.
On the 13th (Saturday), when the winter weather will become more intense, heavy snow is predicted to occur not only from Hokuriku to the Sea of Japan coast to the north, but also from northern Kanto, Yamanashi Prefecture, and Nagano Prefecture. The common university entrance test will be held on the weekend, but if you are in an area where snow is forecast, please pay attention to traffic information and allow plenty of time for your trip.

In the Hokuriku region, which was affected by the 2020 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, precipitation and sunshine hours are expected to be on par with normal years, and snowfall is expected to be less than normal over the next month.
According to the near-term forecast, there is a possibility of “warning-level heavy rain” in Ishikawa Prefecture tomorrow, the 12th (Friday), and then it will turn into snow and become heavier on the 13th (Saturday). Snow is expected to continue falling from the 15th (Monday) to the 16th (Tuesday) at the beginning of the week, and the wind is expected to become stronger, raising the risk of increased snowfall in the affected areas.

Even a little rain could increase the risk of landslides again, and snow could make road conditions even worse in some places. Please be on high alert for new disasters and secure yourself in a safe and warm place as much as possible.

[Northern Japan]Hokkaido/Tohoku region
[Eastern Japan]Kanto-Koshin, Hokuriku, and Tokai regions
[Western Japan]Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku, Northern Kyushu, Southern Kyushu
[Okinawa/Amami]Kagoshima Prefecture Amami region/Okinawa region

Risks associated with wind, heavy snow, and low temperatures

There are risks such as the following due to wind, heavy snow, and low temperatures.

(1) Power outage (This may occur due to power lines being cut due to the weight of fallen trees or snow.)
In preparation for a power outage, it’s a good idea to have flashlights, warm clothing, blankets, etc. on hand.
It is also a good idea to prepare a mobile battery to ensure a power source.

(2)Water water freezes (water may freeze when the minimum temperature drops to -4℃ or lower or during consecutive midwinter days.)
Drain the water from the water pipes beforehand. Also, keep exposed outdoor water pipes and meters warm by wrapping them tightly with special tape using heat insulating material such as Styrofoam.

(3) Product shortages (this may occur due to logistics delays due to transportation network paralysis).
It’s a good idea to buy a little more food and a little more fuel for heating in advance.
