In Japan, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake triggered a tsunami in the center of the country. The Japanese meteorological agency announced on Monday that the first tsunami waves had already hit land.

Announcements on Japanese radio had previously urged residents to immediately seek refuge in higher areas.

According to local authorities and the fire department, numerous houses in the affected region were severely damaged by the quake, which was also felt in Tokyo. The quake struck at around 4:10 p.m. local time in the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture. Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world.

According to the government, no abnormalities caused by the earthquake were initially found in the Japanese nuclear power plants.
