Electricity supplies were cut off to around 6,000 households in Obihiro and Wakkanai, Hokkaido.
Flights to Niigata and Izumo, near the Sea of Japan, have also been cancelled.
In addition to Hokkaido and the Sea of Japan, there was a lot of snow in Kyushu and Shikoku, where it usually gets little snow.
In Minamata, Kumamoto, Kyushu, about 50 vehicles were stranded due to heavy snow.
The Japan Meteorological Agency predicted that up to 100cm more snow would fall in some areas by 6am on the 24th.
