Japan Earthquake: Highest Alert Since 2011 Fukushima Disaster

The quake’s epicenter, Noto, Ishikawa Prefecture, was on the highest alert since March 2011, when a magnitude-nine earthquake triggered a devastating tsunami and nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Tsunami warnings of up to three meters high have also been issued in Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama prefectures.

TV3 also managed to contact Benediktas, a Lithuanian living in Japan, who luckily was not in her place of residence near the epicenter of the events, but in the city of Kyoto, which is further inside the country.

“We didn’t feel anything, we didn’t get any warnings either. Because the earthquake could be felt a little more north of Kyoto, but not in the city itself,” says Benediktas Zemaitis.

It should be noted that, according to the data at the disposal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there are no Latvian citizens living in the earthquake-affected area, and currently no calls have been received regarding the need to help.

In many regions, buildings have collapsed, electricity supply has been disrupted, traffic infrastructure has also been damaged. At the moment, it is not clear whether the strong earthquake will also have claimed human lives.

Benediktas knew how to tell that a lot of attention is paid to the notification of locals and especially foreigners.

“The government has issued warnings that one should stay in buildings that are taller. For people living in Japan, especially foreigners, there is also an app where we have updated safety recommendations. This means that we have access to explanations about the recommendations in force in the country. Especially for me, now that I’m in Kyoto, so that I know that – if something happens, and there are also recommendations for everyone from the north of the country to leave the territories,” reveals Benediktas.

Although coastal areas were hit by the first tsunami waves of more than one meter high today, the threat level has been reduced for almost the entire west coast of Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned of future possible earthquakes and their possible consequences.
