A Chinese aircraft “violated territorial airspace off the Danjo Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture,” Japan’s Defense Ministry said in a statement, adding that it had scrambled its “fighter aircraft on an emergency basis.”
The Chinese aircraft, a “Y-9 intelligence-gathering aircraft,” entered Japanese airspace at 11:29 a.m. (02:29 GMT) for about two minutes, he said.
Local media, including state broadcaster NHK, said it was the first incursion by a Chinese military aircraft into Japanese airspace.
In the past, there have been tense incidents between Chinese and Japanese ships in disputed areas, notably the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, known to Beijing as the Diaoyus Islands.
In recent years, Beijing has been increasingly assertive in its claims to the disputed islands, where Tokyo has denounced the presence of Chinese coastguards, a warship and even a nuclear submarine.
