Japan declares Tokyo state of emergency, alcohol is prohibited

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Government Japan is rumored to be immediately declaring a state of emergency in the capital Tokyo, Thursday (8/7/2021). This step was taken due to the high number of corona infections while the city had to host the Olympics later this month.

Japanese Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura said the state of emergency in Tokyo would start from July 12 to August 22. He also said there would be restrictions applied in restaurants.

“Japan will declare a state of emergency for Tokyo which will host the Olympics to try to contain the new wave of coronavirus infections,” he said Reuters.

“Under the tightened restrictions, restaurants will be required to stop serving alcohol.”

Later the announcement will be officially announced by Prime Minister (PM) Yoshihide Suga at a press conference.

This decision was taken after on Wednesday (7/7/2021) Tokyo reported the highest record of transmission of the corona virus since May. Where there are 920 daily infection cases.

Concerns are also now mounting after several health facilities in the world’s most populous city reported more infections of the more dangerous Delta variant. The Delta variant is a new strain of coronavirus discovered in India and is highly contagious.

Meanwhile, the Japanese government and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are finalizing proposals on the allowed number of spectators. Previously, it was agreed that the audience would be limited to only domestic viewers with a total capacity of 50%.

But this proposal is likely to be scaled back after medical advisory experts have said that the Games, which will be held from July 23 to August 8, are better off without spectators.

Cumulatively, as of Thursday (8/7/2021) Japan found 810,000 cases of Covid-19 with 14,000 deaths since the pandemic hit. The current active cases are 16,177.
