After its defeat in World War II, Japan imposed strict rules on arms exports. Japan is today an important ally for the United States, but has not directly contributed weapons to Ukraine.
Now Japan is considering sending air defense to the United States, and this upsets Russia. Ukraine is struggling to get enough anti-aircraft missiles to stop Russian attacks, and the US and the West are struggling to produce enough ammunition.

Japan is sitting on a large quantity of “Patriot” missiles, which it is now considering sending back to the United States. Patriot is an American-developed air defense system, and in Ukraine this has proven to be extremely effective.

Just before Christmas, Ukraine reported that they shot down three Russian fighter jets on the same day, and it is assumed that the Patriot system was behind this.
The missiles that Japan now wants to send to the United States will not end up in Ukraine, but if the United States gets hold of them, the Americans can send a similar amount to Ukraine, without compromising American preparedness.
– It will have serious consequences for the relationship between Japan and Russia, warns spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova, reports the Danish newspaper Berlingske.
