Japan: Chaos from typhoon – Dead, injured and 4 million left their homes – 2024-08-31 15:19:26

Typhoon Sanshan, one of the strongest in recent decades, hit Japan. The toll so far is three dead, 84 injured (most in Miyazaki) and nearly 4 million citizens evacuated.

More than 700 flights were cancelled, as well as many train routes, problems occurred on 80 sections of motorways, while 230,000 homes were left without electricity and 90 without water as reported by the BBC.

Automakers Toyota, Honda, Mazda and Nissan have suspended some operations at their plants in the path of the storm.

“I just wanted to survive,” said one woman, while one man described the hurricane as “unreal and scary.”

It runs at 175 km/h

Typhoon Sanshan is the strongest typhoon so far this year. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), winds were reaching 175 km/h shortly before it reached Kagoshima Prefecture.

This means Sanshan has been categorized as a “very strong typhoon”, the second highest category on the scale. It has now weakened to a severe tropical storm, but the danger has not yet passed.

Some areas are likely to see 700mm of rain, while some computer models are calling for close to 1m of rain over the next five days. Floods and landslides are considered inevitable.
