Jakarta –
Japan began preparations for the second phase of nuclear waste water disposal. Treated wastewater from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (PLTN) is discharged into the ocean.
Reported by AFP, Thursday (5/10/2023), TEPCO, which is the operator of the Fukushima nuclear power plant, said that the second stage of releasing processed wastewater into the waters of the Pacific Ocean began Thursday (5/10) morning, at around 10.18 local time.
The second stage of the disposal process is expected to take place over the next 17 days.
The release of this second stage follows the first stage which was carried out on August 24. At that time Japan has begun disposing of some of the total 1.34 million tonnes of wastewater produced since the devastating tsunami damaged the nuclear power plant in 2011.
Just like the first stage, around 7,800 tons of waste water is estimated to be discharged into the ocean in this second stage.
Tokyo insists that the wastewater does not pose a health risk. This view is supported by the UN nuclear watchdog.
However, Beijing has repeatedly strongly criticized the dumping of nuclear waste.
Not only that, Beijing even imposed a ban on imports of Japanese seafood in response.
