Japan admits to detecting Chinese submarines in its waters

TOKYO – Ministry of Defence Japan said that it had successfully detected a Chinese submarine in its waters. A submarine believed to be from China it is seen in the waters near the southern islands of Japan. This claim comes amid rising maritime tensions between the two countries.

“The Japanese Navy on Friday morning identified a submarine sailing northwest outside the territorial waters near the island of Amami Oshima, part of Kagoshima prefecture,” the ministry said.

“A Chinese destroyer was also seen in the vicinity,” he continued in a statement, as reported by Reuters on Sunday (12/9/2021).

In its statement, the ministry said the vessels were identified in a contiguous zone, which is outside the territorial waters where vessels are required to identify themselves.

Tokyo itself has complained of much interference by Chinese ships in its territorial waters and near disputed islands in recent years.
