Janusz Gajos first appeared on a professional stage long before he graduated from the acting department of the Łódź Film School. He was 18 years old when he joined the puppet team of the Zagłębia Children’s Theater in Będzin.
“I started by drawing the curtain. Then I kept an eye on the tape recorders… And so, step by step, I made it to an episode in “Colorful Songs”, and then I played large puppet roles. But I still thought about a living theater, and the path to it led through school in Łódź,” he recalled in the book.
Janusz Gajos was admitted to acting studies only the fourth time, in 1961. He was already finishing his studies when Professor Maria Kaniewska entrusted him with the role of Harlequin in the play “Game of Interests”, which she directed at the Powszechny Theater. However, he got a job in another theater in Łódź. From the day he played Columbus for the first time in the play “Columbians born in ’20” (the premiere took place on November 10, 1965 at the Stefan Jaracz Theatre), he spent almost every evening on stage for the next 50 years.
“I’m tired,” he admitted in the fall of 2022 in an interview with “Newsweek” and confirmed the rumor that had been circulating in the capital’s salons for some time that he had decided to resign from his job at the National Theater in the capital.
“There are some concerns that I won’t be able to cope during the performance,” he said, in turn, as a guest in the “Dzień Dobry TVN” studio.

In 2020, when all theaters were closed, Janusz Gajos had a lot of time to think about his professional future. However, he did not expect that fate would thwart many of his plans by sending him sick.
“(…) When I returned to the stage after the break, during one of the performances I missed one word, then another. I felt discomfort and anxiety (…)” – he told a journalist of “Newsweek”, explaining the decision to leave Narodowy.
Janusz Gajos decided that since he was forgetting the lyrics, there was no point in deceiving himself and the audience any longer.
“These mistakes can, of course, be covered up, but the frequency of such events is annoying. It was not a pleasant feeling to catch yourself and embroider something. I thought it stopped making sense,” he confessed and added that he began to carefully observe himself and came to the conclusion that very disturbing conclusions.
“I had to honestly say that I no longer have the confidence and fitness I once had,” he told Jacek Tomczuk.
Janusz Gajos admits that for several years he has not felt like – in his words – “master of the situation” when standing on stage.
“For years, I felt as comfortable on stage as I did at home. I always wanted what I did to be played perfectly,” he told Newsweek.
The virus made Janusz Gajos lose his strength and that’s why he resigned from his job at the theater.
“I noticed that this mechanism, which is my body, was no longer obedient. I went to the director and informed him about the decision. He accepted it,” he says.
Today, Janusz Gajos’ name does not appear in the cast of any performance in any theater in the capital.
However, Janusz Gajos is not thinking about retirement for now. We can currently admire him on cinema screens as President Marczuk in the film “Różyczka 2”.
The actor jokes that he saw some actors waiting too long to leave the stage, and it was an unpleasant sight, so if he decides that he really can’t cope anymore, he will say goodbye to acting for good.
“I realize how old I am, and actually if I looked at how much I’ve recorded in my life, I should come to the conclusion that I deserve a comfortable lounger and rest,” he said recently.
