January container volume increased by 38 for 5 consecutive months

January container traffic volume increased by 3.8%… 5 consecutive months increase
Total port traffic volume decreased by 1.6%… Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries “Preemptive promotion of attracting new routes”

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Oh Ye-jin = Last month, the volume of container traffic handled at trade ports across the country increased 3.8% from the same period last year, driven by increased demand for US routes. It has been increasing for 5 consecutive months.
However, the total port traffic volume declined by 1.6% from the same period last year, unable to overcome the aftermath of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19).

◇ Container traffic volume increased by 3.8%… 5 consecutive months increase
According to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries on the 21st, the volume of container handling at ports nationwide last month was 2.47 million TEU, an increase of 3.8% from 2.38 million TEU (1 TEU equals one 20-foot container) last month. Despite the decrease in transshipment volume, the overall increase was driven by an increase in import and export volume.
Container traffic volume increased for 5 consecutive months until last month. As the demand for consumer goods in the Americas has increased since September last year, the government’s active support measures such as mass input of temporary ships and securing shipping space on the American route have an impact.
In particular, container imports and exports increased 8.9% last month to 1.42 million TEU. Exports increased by 11.7% to 710,000 TEU and imports increased by 6.2% to 710,000 TEU.
However, transshipment decreased by 2.4% to 10.2 million TEU.
By port, Busan Port was 1.84 million TEU, up 1.9% from the same period last year. The volume of trade increased slightly, centered on import and export volume.
Incheon Port was counted at 307,000 TEU, an increase of 15.7%. Thanks to the Vietnam route opened in February last year and the China route established in July, the 13.0% increase in imports and exports had a big impact.
Gwangyang Port recorded 164,000 TEU, a decrease of 1.8% from the same period last year. Although the volume of imports and exports increased by 3.0% to 145,000 TEU, the transshipment volume decreased by 27.4% to 19,000 TEU due to the consolidation of the route following the reorganization of the World Federation of Maritime Movements.

◇ 4.5% reduction in non-containers… Gwangyang Port slightly increased due to the increase in steel product traffic
Last month, the total volume of non-container cargo at ports across the country was 85.4 million tons, down 4.5% from the same period last year (87.46 million tons).
Ulsan Port recorded 14.81 million tons, a 4.9% decrease from the same period last year due to the decrease in the volume of imported oil.
Incheon Port was counted to 9.48 million tons, a 6.7% decrease due to the decrease in oil imports and the use of bituminous coal from thermal power plants.
Pyeongtaek and Dangjin Ports recorded 8.86 million tons, down 1.6% due to a decrease in the export volume of steel materials and a decrease in the import volume of bituminous coal.
However, Gwangyang Port increased 0.9% to 27.74 million tons due to the recovery of iron ore and steel products and other steel products.
Including containers and non-containers, the total volume of port traffic handled by trade ports nationwide last month was 128.9 million tons. It decreased by 1.6% from the same period last year (130.4 million tons).
Park Young-ho, head of the Port Logistics Planning Division of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, said, “The volume of imports and exports has decreased slightly due to the contraction of trade due to the continuation of Corona 19, but the decline has decreased significantly from the previous month.”
He added, “We will continue to monitor the current situation and proactively promote the attraction of new routes with the Port Authority.”
