The moon is at its farthest point from Earth at a distance of 404,909 km.
  • January 4, 2024: Last Month
The moon rises at midnight and sets at noon. The moon is visible from midnight until dawn.
  • January 11, 2024: New Moon
At this time, the Moon rises almost at the same time as the Sun rises. Observers can enjoy the planets without the interference of Moonlight.
  • January 13, 2024: Moon at perigee
The moon reaches its closest distance to Earth, namely 362,267 km.
  • January 18, 2024: Early Lunar New Year
The Moon will be visible from sunset until midnight when the Moon sets. Sky watchers can enjoy a moon-free sky from midnight until early morning.
  • January 26, 2024: Full Moon
The moon will be above the horizon from sunset until dawn. Good opportunity to observe the Moon and its craters. After the full moon phase, the Moon will slowly shift its rising time to night.
  • January 29, 2024: Moon at apogee

January 2024 Sky Phenomena: Meteor Rain

Apart from the Moon phenomenon, according to the Langit Selatan website, there are several meteor shower phenomena that occurred this January. The following is the meteor shower phenomenon in January 2024 and the estimated time it will occur:

  • January 3-4 2024: Quadrantid Meteor Shower

The Quadrantid meteor shower show occurs from December 26 to January 14. The peak of the Quadrantid meteor shower will take place on January 3-4 2024 and appears to appear from the Bootes constellation which rises at 02.46 WIB in the northeast. The final quarter moon that rises at midnight is bright enough to be a challenge in hunting for Quadrantid meteors.

Unlike other meteor showers, the maximum intensity of the Quadrantid meteor shower only occurs for a few hours. Quadrantids originate from the debris of the asteroid 2003 EH1 as it orbits the Sun every 5.52 years. During peak night, observers can enjoy at least 121 meteors per hour moving at a speed of 41 km/second. However, for observers in the Southern Hemisphere, the Quadrantid meteor shower is not as good as for observers in the North and the number of meteors that can be enjoyed is also less.

Celestial Phenomenon January 2024: Planetary Exposure

Not only that, there is also a planetary impact phenomenon that will occur in January 2024. The following are several planetary impact phenomena in January 2024 along with the estimated time of occurrence, as reported by the Langit Selatan website:

  • January 3, 2024: Perihelion
The Earth moves around the Sun in an elliptical trajectory. This means that there are times when the Earth is at its closest point to the Sun and there are times when the Earth is very far from the Sun. On January 3, Earth was at its closest point to the sun at a distance of 0.9833 AU or 147,105,052 km from the Sun.
  • January 5, 2024: Moon – Spica
The moon passes quite close to Spica, a bright star in the constellation Virgo. The two were only 2º apart on the 5th before dawn. The moon rises at midnight at 00.05 WIB, followed by Spica seven minutes later.
  • January 9, 2024: Moon – Venus – Antares
The moon passes Venus and forms a triangle with Antares, a bright star in the constellation Scorpius. These three objects can be observed early in the morning before the sun rises. Antares rises first at 02.53 WIB, followed by the Moon at 03.08 WIB and Venus fades a minute later at 03.09 WIB. The moon and Venus are in the constellation Ophiuchus. The Moon, Venus, and Antares are about 5º apart from each other in the sky.
  • January 10, 2024: Moon – Mercury – Mars
The Moon and Mars in the constellation Sagittarius pass each other and form a triangle with Mercury in the constellation Ophiuchus. All three can be observed before the sun rises but their position is very low on the eastern horizon. The Moon and Mars are 4º apart while with Mercury the Moon is 6º apart. Mercury rises at 04.04 WIB, followed by the Moon at 04.08 WIB and Mars which only rises at 04.37 WIB.
  • January 12, 2024: Maximum Westward Elongation of Mercury
Mercury and the Sun form a maximum angle to the Earth. The maximum western elongation achieved by Mercury is 23.5º. This means that Mercury will be 23.5º to the east of the Sun. Mercury in the constellation Sagittarius can be observed with a brightness of -0.1 magnitude from 04.04 WIB until the sun rises at 05.43 WIB.
  • January 14, 2024: Moon – Saturn
The Moon and Saturn pass each other closely in the constellation Aquarius and can be observed after sunset. The two objects are 2º apart and can be observed until Saturn sets at 20:48 WIB, followed by the Moon at 20.59 WIB.
  • January 18, 2024: Moon – Jupiter
The moon passes Jupiter in the constellation Aries at a distance of 2.5º. These two objects can be observed after sunset until midnight. The moon sets first at 00:00 WIB, followed by Jupiter 9 minutes later.
  • January 20, 2024: Moon – Pleiades
The moon passes the Pleiades star cluster at a distance of 0.8º and can be observed from sunset until after midnight. The Pleiades Cluster sets at 01:29 WIB in the morning and the Moon follows eight minutes later at 01:37 WIB.
  • January 24, 2024: Moon – Pollux
The moon passes Pollux in the constellation Gemini at a distance of 1.5º and can be observed from sunset until just before dawn. Pollux, the bright star in Gemini, sets at 05:09 WIB, followed by the Moon at 05.13 WIB.
  • January 27, 2024: Mercury – Mars
Mercury and Mars pass each other in the constellation Sagittarius and can be seen before the sun rises, even though both are still very low on the eastern horizon. Mercury rises first at 04:24 WIB, followed by Mars three minutes later. What is certain is that these two objects will be difficult to observe because their position is still low on the horizon. Apart from that, Mercury and Mars also form a straight line with Venus, which rose earlier at 03:33 WIB and is higher in the morning sky.
  • January 27, 2024: Moon – Regulus
The Moon passes Regulus in the constellation Leo at a distance of 3.5º and can be observed after the Moon rises at 19.34 WIB followed by Regulus 5 minutes later. Both can be observed until dawn.
