A bang at Wimbledon. World number one Jannik Sinner fails in the quarterfinals over five sets against Russian Daniil Medvedev (ATP 5). The 28-year-old won 6:7, 6:4, 7:6, 2:6 and 6:3. Sinner suffered from circulatory problems after the start of the second set and was obviously not in full possession of his strength. At the beginning of the third set, after losing his serve, he called the physiotherapist and left the court for a medical time-out.
More than ten minutes passed before it continued. The 22-year-old then tried to keep the rallies short and annoyed the Russian, who was six years his senior, with stop balls. At the end of the third set, the top seed came back and equalized at 5:5, but gave up the third set in the tiebreak. In the fifth round the break to 1:3 ensured the preliminary decision. Nevertheless, the South Tyrolean kept up for a long time and forced Medvedev into the fifth round. There the Russian had the upper hand.
Medvedev now has the chance for revenge against Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals. He failed against the Spaniard in the round of the last four last year. The 21-year-old Iberian won the title at Wimbledon in 2023. This year Alcaraz was able to eliminate the American Tommy Paul (ATP 13) after a weak start with 5:7, 6:4, 6:2, 6:2. «It was a difficult game. I had to stay mentally strong and I’m glad I was able to find solutions,” said the defending champion, who beat Novak Djokovic (ATP 2) in the Wimbledon final in 2023.
