In Wimbledon and most recently at the Masters 1000 tournament in Toronto, Jannik Sinner was blessed with the luck of the draw. The tide has now turned at the upcoming US Open. As the drawing revealed on Thursday, the 22-year-old in New York is facing a mammoth program.

Unlike the other Grand Slams, the draw in New York is not public. The social media channels of the tournament were all the more excited on Thursday evening. At 6 p.m. sharp (CEST) it was clear: Jannik Sinner has a rocky road ahead of him. The tournament begins with the duel against the German Yannick Hanfmann (ATP 54) and then becomes more and more difficult.
As in the previous year, the Sesto was assigned to Carlos Alcaraz’ quarters. This could mean that last year’s epic match could be repeated in the quarterfinals. A lap earlier, the revived Alexander Zverev (ATP 12) is in Sinner’s path. The former US Open finalist last reached the semi-finals in Cincinnati and defeated Sinner in the round of 16 in New York in 2021. If Sinner masters these two hurdles, a showdown with feared opponent Daniil Medvedev beckons in the semi-finals. A draw that couldn’t be harder.
Hanfmann an old acquaintance
Because the Hanfmann match also has its pitfalls. Although the 31-year-old is a proven clay court specialist, he has also proven his qualities on hard courts. In the previous year, Hanfmann gained notoriety in this country when he put an end to Andreas Seppi’s career at the Challenger in Ortisei. If Sinner masters this first hurdle, a duel against compatriot Lorenzo Sonego (ATP 38), who meets a qualifier at the start, is likely.
It is still uncertain whether Sinner will enter the tournament on Monday or only on Tuesday. On Thursday, the protégé of Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi hit his first balls at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center – and of all things with his good friend Alcaraz. Sinner will use the next few days to prepare as best as possible for the last Grand Slam tournament of the year.
