Sinner beat Draper to reach US Open final

World number one Jannik Sinner of Italy defeated British player Jack Draper at Arthur Ashe Stadium to reach the final of the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season.

Sinner managed to win two very even first sets and clearly won the third to beat Draper 7-5, 7-6 (3) and 6-2.

Sinner is seeking his second title at this level after winning the Australian Open earlier this year, when he beat Daniel Medvedev in the final. Draper, meanwhile, had made it through one fourth round at a Grand Slam in his career.

Sinner began the US Open by defeating Mackenzie McDonalds in four sets 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2, then easily defeated another American in the next round, Alex Michelsen, 6-4, 6-0, 6-2. Meanwhile, in the third round he faced Christopher O’Connell, with whom he had no major surprises (6-1, 6-4, 6-2) to reach the round of 16 and face local Tommy Paul, whom he beat in three sets 7-6, 7-6, 6-1. In his last appearance in the quarterfinals he faced Daniil Medvedev in a match that was decided in four sets 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.

On the other hand, the Englishman, who vomited in the middle of the match, had not lost a set until then. In the first round he faced the Chinese Zhang Zhizhen, who retired in the third set after going 6-3, 6-0 and 4-0, then in the next round he defeated the Argentine Facundo Diaz Acosta by 6-4, 6-2 and 6-2 to get into the third round where he had to face Botic van Zandschulp whom he left behind after a 6-3, 6-4 and 6-2. In the round of 16 it was the turn of the Czech Tomas Machac, whom he beat without too many complications by 6-3, 6-1 and 6-2, to qualify for the quarterfinals where the Australian Alex de Minaur was waiting, whom he defeated by 6-3, 7-5 and 6-2. In the semifinals his dream ended.
