Dominique Devenport and Jannik Schümann will soon be wearing baroque costumes and playing Sisi and Franz in a new series. The dream couple of the Austrian monarchy!
Dare to approach “Sisi” is quite brave, because Romy Schneider and Karl-Heinz Böhm have simply been the undisputed dream couple for the Austrian imperial couple for decades. But that was in the 50s and viewing habits have changed a bit.
Jannik Schümann as Emperor Franz
So now Sunnyboy Jannik Schümann (29, “9 days awake”, “The Middle of the World”) and Dominique Devenport (25, “Night Train to Lisbon”) are trying to track down the imperial couple and we have to say with no envy: Fesch see it out!
“Sisi” – the TVNOW event series takes a new look at the life of a young woman who made history as empress and became a legend as a film character. It tells the love story of two young people between personal desires and political pressures, between power and vulnerability.
Short excursion: In 1853 the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph was 23 years old when he fell in love with his 15-year-old cousin Elisabeth (Sisi). The stuff that great dramas are made of!
Lots of new skills
Jannik Schümann praises the complexity of his figure of Emperor Franz Joseph (1830 – 1916). “Outwardly, the emperor appears to be an unscrupulous monarch who is actually only trapped in a cage that he is trying to escape. His emotions were repressed for a lifetime through military education and are only now being discovered by Sisi at his side. I see the balancing act between emotionless and gloomy on the one hand and lovable and innocent on the other hand as my greatest acting challenge. “
He went on to say: “In addition, I was able to acquire a lot of new skills in preparation: riding, fencing, dancing, label training. How cool is that?!”
The remake fits well with the star’s range
Jannik Schümann has a wide range of roles. Born in Hamburg, he is not only an actor, he can also play musicals and dance. Jannik started his career on TV.
There were series appearances in “Die Rettungsflieger” (2003), the two-parter “The Happiness at the Other End of the World” (2007) or as a teenage suspect in “Tatort Liebeshunger”. He could also be seen backstage, in the recording studio, including in the radio play “Oscar and the Lady in Pink”, the bestseller by Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt.
Since Jannik actually comes from dance and musicals, it was not surprising when he appeared on the stage at the Hamburg Operettenhaus in “I’ve never been to New York”. Another mainstay is synchronization. His work for “The Three ???” should definitely be mentioned. We absolutely have to mention how our jet man from the Waterkant made an impression in the TV series “Die Pfefferkörner” (from 1999). He wasn’t always there, but when he did, he was a crush in the football business.

Springboard “home video”
Jannik has diligently expanded his portfolio, repeatedly with crime thriller appearances on TV, until he made it to the big screen with “Homevideo”. Here he shows that a very intriguing piece can be, because “Homevideo” is about the destructive power of cyber-bullying.
Two novel adaptations follow: the bestseller “Spieltrieb” by Juli Zeh, in which Jannik has taken on the very manipulative leading role. In the film adaptation of the youth novel “Die Mitte der Welt” by successful author Andreas Steinhöfel, Jannik made a wonderful performance as Nicholas.
Jannik, the ridge walker
The 29-year-old has always looked to the margins in his choice of roles. He’s probably not so interested in the mainstream. In 2015 he brought another great personality to public television with “My Son Helen”. A boy goes abroad for a year, to the United States, to San Francisco, and comes back as a girl, Helen. And then something mainstream crashes into the film biography – “Charité”, season 2. He plays a medical soldier who has a crush on a nurse. Even before the pandemic, “So Close to the Horizon” was released in theaters in 2019. Difficult to endure stuff. Jannik plays a kickboxer who hands out because he had to take a hard time in childhood. The TV production is again quite drastic with the subject of really hard drugs “9 days awake”.
Jannik is not only brave in his choice of film roles. Courageous in private life too: Jannik came out in December 2020. The many warm reactions in the media have shown how important the topic still is. We say, good like that and carry on – on with the new role as Emperor Franz! (Cinema aunt Katrin)
