In the summer, he made his debut in honor of the chief conductor of the XXVII General Latvian Song Festival, but on a daily basis he is the leader of Babīte’s mixed choir “Maska”, he also works with the Garkalne choir “Pa saulei”, which is led by his spouse Marta. Jānis Ozols has been on the juries of many international and domestic choir competitions, but he himself won the international Baltic Sea choir competition. As a child, Jānis never dreamed of becoming a conductor, but rather of a bus driver’s profession, but living next to Em. Dārziņas music school, the parents decided to send their son there, and since he was accepted, it was only natural to sing in the boys’ choir as well. After that, the road led to the Riga Cathedral Choir School, founded and managed by Jānis Ehrenštreitas, where Jānis completed the choir conducting class. After a little hesitation in the direction of music management, he decided in favor of the choral conducting mission, which was followed by studies at the Academy of Music under professors Sigvardas Kļavas and Jānis Zirnias, and later also at the Swedish Royal College of Music in Stockholm, learning the skill of conducting a symphony orchestra. Jānis, on the other hand, put his vocal talents to good use, not only singing in the boys’ choir of the Riga Cathedral, but in the vocal group “Cosmos” created in the early 2000s together with school and study mates, which quickly gained huge popularity and won laurels in the “Jaunais vilnis” competition for young performers. but in 2006 represented Latvia at the Eurovision Song Contest in Athens. The choir “Maska” directed by Jānis Ozols is currently one of the strongest amateur choirs in Latvia, capable of taking on any musical challenge, from classical works to contemporary music experiments, which is confirmed by the laurels it has won in choir competitions and world olympiads. The latest victory was won at the end of October at the international choral music festival in the Northern Irish city of Derry. On a daily basis, Jānis lives with his wife Marta and three children – Lilija, Jānis and Justa – in the countryside in Tukuma county, and although the garden has not been sown this year due to the Song Festival, he admits that the life of the country provides the necessary balance and balance for the intense work of a choir conductor.
