Jang Keun Suk’s Transition to YouTuber: A Rainy Autograph Session

In the early 2000s, Taiwanese audiences’ preference for dramas gradually changed from Japanese dramas to Korean dramas. As Korean dramas became popular all over the world, Korean dramas became one of the most watched mainstream programs. The 2009 broadcast of “You Are Beautiful” brought Jang Geun-suk, who played the leading actor “Huang Tae-kyung”, to the top. He gained great popularity in South Korea, Taiwan and Japan, and was awarded the title of “Asian Prince”. In 2010, Jang Keun Suk stunned thousands of fans and won the awards of “Asia’s Most Popular Korean Male Artist” and “Korea’s Most Popular Male Artist”. Jang Keun Suk founded the YouTube channel “I am Jang Keun Suk (나는장근석)” in March this year. He transformed from an idol, actor, singer and slash to a YouTuber. It has now exceeded 110,000 subscribers. In order to celebrate reaching 100,000 subscriptions, Jang Keun Suk and his team decided to hold a surprise autograph session, decorating the outdoor space of the cafe with support banners and preparing rice cakes as small gifts to give back to fans.

Unfortunately, it rained heavily on the day of the autograph session, and since it was a surprise without much prior publicity, the event was quite deserted, with more staff than fans. I was asked if anyone would come if it rained so hard? Jang Keun Suk remained optimistic: “It doesn’t matter, it’s more romantic this way!”

Although Jang Keun Suk was full of enthusiasm and the number of subscribers did exceed 100,000, only 7 people actually showed up to respond that day. The first gentleman saw it in passing and went in to ask for his daughter’s autograph. However, Jang Keun Suk also gained one more subscription. Fortunately, some action-oriented True Love fans came to support him, praising Jang Keun Suk for being more handsome in person, and were surprised to receive autographs, gifts and photos.

Although Jang Keun Suk raised his voice in the rain and openly solicited customers, the effect was not effective. The fans who had been waiting for a long time to come to attend, and their originally happy and confident smiles gradually disappeared. However, Jang Keun Suk was not discouraged, saying that he must have lost his main customers because he chose the wrong date and happened to encounter heavy rain. “If it hadn’t rained, fans would have queued at the intersection behind them.”

Later, Jang Keun Suk had an idea and decided not to waste the carefully prepared gifts. He personally served as a delivery boy to take rice cakes and distribute them to celebrity friends, including Jenny Park, a model who is about to turn 17 and has 910,000 YouTube subscribers, and someone whom Jang Keun Suk has known for almost 20 years.
