Small Theater Haakjeon won the Achievement Award.
The ‘8th Korean Musical Awards’ was held at the Peace Hall of Kyunghee University in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul at 7pm on the 15th. Musical actor Lee Geon-myeong, who has been with the ‘1st Korea Musical Awards’, served as MC, and The MC Orchestra was present again this year.
Hakjeon opened as a small theater in Daehakro in March 1991 by singer Kim Min-ki, who composed folk songs such as ‘Morning Dew’ and ‘Evergreen Tree.’ Hakjeon has been experiencing financial difficulties due to Kim Min-ki’s prolonged battle with stomach cancer, being hit hard by COVID-19, and the number of audiences for Daehakro performances decreasing over the years, so it decided to close this year, celebrating its 33rd anniversary.
Jang Hyun-seong, who was called the Five Eagle Brothers along with Kim Yun-seok, Sol Kyeong-gu, Hwang Jeong-min, and Cho Seung-woo, received the award on behalf of Kim Min-gi, who was unable to attend.
Jang Hyun-seong said, “I started my acting career in 1994 as a member of the first class of a theater theater academy. Some people may be surprised, but there was a musical in 1994 as well. In fact, when he started his theater training, he did not think about the long future. Although he had various courses, he took quite a long break from musical theater. “It’s nice to see that your dreams and passion are within reach here,” he said.
He continued, “This year marks the 33rd anniversary of the school’s opening. Numerous actors, singers, and employees have worked with Hakjeon so far. And at the center of it all was teacher Minki Kim. Teacher Kim Min-gi was unwell, so I came here in his place. “I also begged her teacher to get her notes,” he said, reading her notes.
Kim Min-ki said, “Thank you to all the actors, staff, and audiences who have gone through academic hardships. Now it’s time to start again. “I will definitely get up again.” Jang Hyun-seong appeared to be holding back tears as he read the memo.
Jang Hyun-seong said, “I ask for a warm round of applause for Kim Min-gi,” and added, “I hope he gets well quickly and puts on a hot and exciting stage together, just like Cho Seung-woo said.”
The ‘8th Korea Musical Awards’ is a musical awards ceremony hosted by the Korea Musical Association and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Arts Council of Korea. The market for musicals performed during the year was settled, market trends were analyzed and evaluated, and winners were selected through fair voting by an expert voting group and an audience voting group.
