He claims that Vasil Kaplanov himself told him before Janek’s disappearance that he had sex with his ex-wife P., saying that Janek would disappear, referring to the witness as his future abduction and murder.
In the course of this case, it became clear that the relations between Janek and Kaplata had actually deteriorated, and his son Nikola was aware of this. He knew of his mother’s old intimate relationship with Janek. In the summer of 2019, in a restaurant in Dupnitsa, Vasil Kaplanov pointed out Janek to his son Nikola, who was photographing him with a phone.
In 2019 and 2020, there were several attacks on cars and Janek’s home, for which there were complaints to the police and the prosecutor’s office. These cases forced him to install a video camera on the facade of the block to capture the parking lot.
For a year and 3 months there is no trace of Janek. The 43-year-old man was last seen getting into the jeep of Vasil Kaplanov-Kaplata on the evening of July 31, 2020. Since then, his traces have been lost.
Before disappearing, he lived and worked in Paris. He had an affair with Kaplata’s ex-wife. Because of this, the relationship between the two was bad. In the last year, Janek has received threats, his apartment in the Bistritsa residential area in Dupnitsa was shot at, his car was scratched several times, and his tires were flat.

Yanek and Kaplanov stumbled upon each other in Dupnitsa and agreed to see each other to clear their relationship. So on the evening of July 31, Kaplata went in his jeep to Janek’s block. He was with neighbors in front of the entrance. He left his keys on a table in front of them and headed for Kaplata’s jeep.
Cameras show that the car is heading to the nearby village of Kraynitsi, and Janek is in the front seat. Later, the car returned to Dupnitsa, but Janek was not there.
The search for him has been going on for several months. Hundreds of policemen with dogs roamed around Dupnitsa, ponds were searched, but to no avail. No charges have been filed for his disappearance, and the prosecution continues to work to find out what happened.
In the meantime, Vasil Kaplanov was briefly detained, but was later released from custody. A search on August 7 at addresses where he lives and visits found 115 cartridges. The Dupnitsa District Court acquitted him at first instance and fined him BGN 600. It turned out that he had a weapons permit because he practiced shooting.
After this accusation, the prosecutor’s office filed a second complaint against him – for threatening to kill a man on Facebook, who expressed suspicion that Janek’s disappearance had something to do with Kaplanov.
