British actress, singer and 1970s fashion icon Jane Birkin died on July 16, 2023 at the age of 76. She became famous with the hit “Je t’aime… moi non plus”, which she sang with her boyfriend, French singer Serge Gainsbourg. In addition, she will forever be associated with the luxurious Hermès Birkin bag that bears her name. The price of the accessory today starts at around 200,000 crowns, so the question is, will customers still pay extra for the handbag after Jane Birkin’s death?

The story of one of the most expensive handbags in the world began in 1984. Jane Birkin sat on a plane next to Jean-Louis Dumas, one of the owners of the Hermès brand. They were putting away their luggage and Jane had a rattan basket with her instead of a purse. Everything fell out of it, Dumas was amused and suggested that he make a handbag for her that nothing would fall out of.
Jane Birkin could have all the Birkins for free in “exchange” for having the handbag named after her. But the fashion icon didn’t abuse it and said she only owned five pieces in her entire life. She wore them until they were pretty worn out and then donated them all to charity. “She always carried a size 35 black Birkin bag, whether for evening, day or all occasions. She even slept on them during airport transfers,” said Eva Sýkorová Čomborová, collector and founder of the complex Virvar platform for the support of Czech-Slovak design, for Refresher.
