From roman Puree by the Flemish writer Jan Vantoortelboom has won the Boekenbon Literature Prize. This was announced in the Grote or Sint-Jacobskerk in The Hague. The prize is worth 50,000 euros.
Puree is about a man in his seventies, Mauk, who looks back on his life on his deathbed. According to the jury, Vantoortelboom delivered with his novel “a stunning literary portrait of a traumatized seventy-year-old who is haunted by his childhood memories”.
The jury also praises the book because a lot takes place “between the lines”, “where the events reveal themselves in the rich visual language that is at least as captivating as the story itself”.
