Jan Ullrich: ‘I escaped death again’ | cycling

sport">“I had a thrombosis and a very severe blood poisoning. I escaped death again,” the winner of the 1997 Tour de France declared in the German newspaper image. He wants to get rid of the rumors that he is addicted again. “At the start of the treatment, I had a drug test, and of course it was negative.”

sport">In late September, Ullrich reiterated in his former rival Lance Armstrong’s podcast that he struggled with drug use three years ago. “You know my story, three years ago I was really bad. You visited me. I went the same way as Marco Pantani. I almost died,” Ullrich said at the time in Mallorca.

sport">When Ullrich returned from a trip to Cuba over a week ago, the plane had to make a stopover because he was not feeling well. He was admitted to a hospital in Mexico. There he was visited by Armstrong. “He was the first one with me in Mexico. He helped me a lot. I want to thank him for that,” said Ullrich in image.

sport">Ullrich is struggling with back problems, he reports. “Three or four intervertebral discs have completely collapsed in the meantime. I am now only 1 meter 81. (compared to 1 meter 83 before, red).”
