Singer Jan Smit has received the Edison Pop Oeuvre Prize. On the talk show Humberto he was presented with the prize by his 10-year-old son Senn. The jury calls Smit “an artist who is always recognizable to a large audience.”

The Volendammer, who is now 38, scored his first hit at the age of 11, then still as Jantje Smit. He was discovered when he was allowed to sing with the band BZN and became known at the beginning of his career with songs such as Mama in I sing this song for you alone. The singer also made German-language albums and performed in Belgium, France and Italy at a young age.

The other Edisons will be awarded on Monday. Last year the oeuvre prize went to the Utrecht band Kensington.

The Edison is the oldest music prize in the Netherlands and has been awarded since 1960. Winners receive a bronze statue of Pieter d’Hont. This year the Edison jury was chaired by radio DJ Daniël Dekker and consisted of radio makers and other people from the music world.
