Omroep MAX boss Jan Slagter will submit proposals to the NPO “in the short term” for programs with Matthijs van Nieuwkerk in the lead role. Slagter hopes that the presenter can return to TV.
In the first instance, Slagter focuses on “a program in which Van Nieuwkerk can tell his side of the story. But it seems right to me that he will then do more on Dutch television,” he says to ANP.
The broadcaster pleaded for it on Tuesday evening RTL Boulevard to allow Van Nieuwkerk to return to television as soon as possible. Slagter recently had dinner with Van Nieuwkerk and, on behalf of the former BNNVARA presenter, says “that Matthijs is willing to say something about what happened and what it did to him”.
Earlier, Slagter claimed that the NPO prevented Van Nieuwkerk from returning because the public broadcaster would like to wait for the investigation into transgressive behavior within the organization. But Slagter now says that this is not correct and that “the way is now clear for Matthijs to return to television”.
Research into misconduct within NPO may be published this summer
Slagter hopes to submit his plan for an interview with Van Nieuwkerk to the NPO this week. “Of course things went wrong, but Matthijs is entitled to a stage to share his side of the story,” says the broadcaster.
The NPO does not want to respond to Slagter’s plan on Tuesday evening. Van Nieuwkerk’s spokesperson is also not yet available for comment.
Van Nieuwkerk left BNNVARA at the end of 2022 after reporting from de Volkskrant about a culture of fear that prevailed in the editors of his program The World Keeps Turning (DWDD).
A committee under former minister Martin van Rijn is investigating cross-border behavior within the NPO. Also alleged misconduct DWDD is included in the investigation. The findings are expected to be published in the summer.
