Jan Pennings, the Dutchman who won the first edition of the VTM program ‘Lego Masters’ last year with ex-wife Lola Nouwens, has died at the age of 31.

“Intensely sad and above all unreal: Jantje is no longer there,” Nouwens writes on Instagram. “I am incredibly grateful for his infectious zest for life, infinite creativity and indestructible optimism, for his friendship and loving care, for his weird humor and hysterical laugh. But above all, I am incredibly sad. Because man, I miss him already.”

Pennings overcame a brain tumor at the age of 22, but it is unclear whether he died of cancer. “The family asks for peace and privacy,” says Nouwens.
