Davis Cup professional Jan-Lennard Struff surprisingly reached the quarter-finals of the Masters tournament that was moved from Cincinnati to New York.

The 30-year-old Warsteiner won his last sixteen on Tuesday against world number tenth David Goffin from Belgium 6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 4. In the fight for the semi-finals, Struff could now meet Novak Djokovic. The number one in the tennis world plays in its round of 16 in the late evening against the American Tennys Sandgren. For Struff, it is the first quarter-finals in a Masters 1000 event, the highest category behind the four Grand Slam tournaments.
“Of course I’m very happy to be in the quarter-finals here,” said Struff. “It was a very close match. In the third set the momentum was initially on his side, but I stuck with it and was rewarded in the end,” said the Sauerland native.
A few days before the start of the US Open at the same place, Struff showed a very strong performance as in the previous rounds. He always brought Goffin into great distress, especially with aggressive returns. After both players had won a set, Struff did not allow himself to be disturbed by an early break at the beginning of the third round. The German number two immediately took the serve from Goffin and then made the decisive break with a score of 5: 4. After 2:10 hours, Struff turned his first match point with a strong return.
