It has been a tough time for Jan. His three-month-old daughter died last year from complications resulting from a tear in her diaphragm. “I don’t really know what to say,” Frans says when the two arrive at Donna’s grave. “No, but neither do I. It remains difficult”, Jan reacts emotionally.

“Can you ever process something like that?” Frans asks Jan. ”Yes I think so. It’s just a kind of trauma that always stays with us”, says Jan. He continues: ”The death of a child… it does have a place, but it’s just something incomprehensible”

Less than two months after the death of his daughter, Jan also lost his father to the effects of Alzheimer’s. “It happened at a time when we thought: we can’t have this now. But in the end you can handle all that”, says Jan with a deep sigh.

The Volendam singer wrote an emotional song for his deceased daughter. 3JS colleague Jaap Kwakman was also impressed, he says in the video below.
