Jamie Oliver, Celebrity | Star chef Jamie Oliver takes action after “racist” vocabulary – changes several recipes

The chef follows several of the UK’s largest grocery chains.

Jamie Oliver (46) has taken action to prevent being perceived as racist by his fans and customers.

The spice fruit Citrux Hystrix is a regular in several of the celebrity chef’s recipes, and is popularly called kaffir lime. The leaves of the citrus fruit are often used in cooking – but the nickname kaffir lime is not very lucky.

It reports Independent, who writes that the term “kaffir” is often used as an insult to black Africans in South Africa.

It was especially widely used during Apartheid, and is today referred to as the “K-word”, similar to the “N-word”.

Replaces the name

Going forward, the chef will stop using the word “kaffir lime leaves” in reference to the flavoring.

Instead, Oliver will only use the word “lime leaves” from now on.

This applies both in cookbooks and during TV appearances, and according to the Independent, Jamie Oliver’s team is already in the process of editing the content and recipes on his website.

The chef’s choice to drop the word comes after several major retail chains in the UK decided to do the same.

The grocery chain Waitrose was first out, and announced last week that they changed some product names to avoid offending anyone. Since then, competitor Tesco has also followed suit.

Accused of cultural appropriation

Jamie Oliver has probably learned from previous experiences, and is now careful to avoid criticism of his vocabulary.

In 2017, he was accused of cultural appropriation when he launched the product Punchy Jerk Rice, according to BBC.

At the time, the decision to use the word “jerk” was criticized, as the chef’s product did not contain any of the ingredients often used in jerk marinade from Jamaica.

Oliver himself said at the time in a statement that he wanted to share where the inspiration came from through the name:

– I have worked with flavors and spices from around the world throughout my career, learned and found inspiration from different countries and cultures to give a new twist to the food we eat every day.

– My intention was to share where the inspiration came from, said the popular celebrity chef at the time.
