WHAT HAPPENED?

The English Premier League reportedly recommended that Everton be punished with a points deduction if the independent investigative commission decides The Toffees guilty of committing financial irregularities. This report drew a strong reaction from Jamie Carragher, who wondered how severe the punishment would be for Manchester City, considering that the reigning Premier League champions had been charged with 100 financial offenses in the last 14 seasons.

“PL wants to punish Everton with a deduction of 12 points for one charge. Man City will be relegated to the National League North if PL wins!!” he wrote on Twitter. National League North is the sixth tier league in English football and some of its participants are semi-professional teams.

“It’s hard to believe the amount of news that has emerged about the Everton situation, while the Man City situation, which has 114 more charges & has been going on for longer, is actually silent,” added the former Liverpool defender.

THE SITUATION:

The verdict on Everton’s charges will only come down to the hammer later this year and Premier League clubs will certainly be monitoring closely whether The Toffees will be sanctioned or not. Manchester City have countersued the English Premier League – and it could result in a long-term battle in court.

Both teams will return to action in the English Premier League this weekend. Everton visit West Ham tomorrow Sunday (29/10), while Manchester City will travel to Old Trafford to face neighbors, United, a few hours later.
