Jamie Carragher makes a work claim at Everton about England coach Gareth Southgate

Jamie Carragher acknowledges that the fact that England coach Gareth Southgate was not linked to the recent vacancies at Everton and Tottenham Hotspur shows that he is ideal for international play.

The 50-year-old has led the Three Lions to their first European Championship final on Sunday, where they will face Italy at Wembley, but suffered relegation from the Premier League in his sole managerial role in club football with Middlesbrough in 2009.

HITC quotes Carragher as telling Sky Sports: “With Gareth Southgate, he feels perfectly suited to international football and the England team.

“Tottenham and Everton, two of the biggest clubs in the country, had no coach at the time. And no one would link Gareth Southgate to that job.

“That wasn’t a criticism of Gareth or those clubs. It’s just that if great jobs come up in this country, then I don’t think Gareth is competing for them. Either because of what happened in Middlesbrough.

“Or it just seems to be perfect for England. There is no one else who would like to coach England.”

After prolonged searches at both clubs, Everton ended up appointing former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez, while Tottenham Hotspur chose Nuno Espirito Santo, who in early June seemed close to joining the Blues.
