Jamie Benn gives Stars victory in overtime

Greg Beacham, The Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Jamie Benn scored 53 seconds into overtime to give the Dallas Stars a 3-2 victory as they swept their narrow two-game series against the Anaheim Ducks.

Benn speeded past two Ducks players before accepting a pass from Miro Heiskanen to score his 17th goal of the season for the Stars, who have won five of their last six games. This gain allows the Stars to hang on in the race for the playoffs in the West.

Kevin Shattenkirk tied the game for the Ducks with 3:21 remaining in the third period, but they still lost the flag for the 11th straight time. John Gibson stopped 32 shots in the loss.

Andrej Sekera had just previously broken a 2-2 tie with 4:09 to go. It was the first goal in 29 games for Sekera.

Ryan Suter scored in the first period for the Stars and Jake Oettinger made 21 saves for a second straight win against the Ducks.

Jamie Drysdale also hit the target for the Ducks. A first goal for him since December 1. Thanks to overtime, the Ducks collected a point in the standings for only the 4th time in 14 games in March. Another sign that the California outfit’s once-promising season has gone completely off the rails.
