James Webb’s protective hood has been successfully installed in space

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

NASA has successfully opened the telescope hood James Webb which has been orbiting in outer space.

This is the end of a long process. The James Webb telescope has a five-layer sun hood. It takes two days to open one layer.

The kite-shaped protective cover has 21 meters. The function of the lid is to protect James Webb from sunlight.

“All five layers of sun visor are fully tightened,” said a broadcaster at the observatory’s control center in Baltimore.

The five sides of the hood will work together to produce protection from the sun with a strength of about one million SPF.

Due to its large size, when the James Webb telescope was launched last December 25, 2021, the hood was still in the folded position.

Unveiling the James Webb protective hood is said to be a complex and challenging task, one of the most daunting NASA has ever done.

“This is the first time anyone has tried to put a telescope of this size into space,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s science missions directorate.

“Successful fitting of the most challenging (hood) yet, a remarkable testament to the human ingenuity and engineering skill that will allow Webb to achieve his scientific goals.” he continued.

The James Webb telescope was previously officially launched on December 25, 2021.

The Function of the James Webb Telescope

Webb serves as a monitor for the atmospheres of exoplanets or exoplanets, some of which are potentially habitable, and can uncover clues in the ongoing search for extraterrestrial life.

The telescope is equipped with a mirror that can extend 6.5 meters which allows the mirror to collect more light from the object it is observing, once the telescope is in space.
