The James Webb is to be the successor to the famous Hubble Space Telescope, which has been orbiting the Earth since 1990 and has produced very controversial results, but is gradually reaching the end of its service.
However, the Webb is much more than the successor to the Hubble. For example, the James Webb can make observations in infrared and see things that cannot be seen with the naked eye. The James Webb is also much bigger and more powerful. In addition, it will operate from orbit around the sun. It must be able to see much further than any other telescope ever and therefore much further in time. For example, the Webb should notice the first galaxies that formed 200 million years after the famous Big Bang and emitted the first light. The James Webb was developed by the American space agency NASA, its European counterpart ESA and Canada. Belgian institutions such as KU Leuven and the Center Spatial de Liège from Liège are also participating in the project.
