James Webb Space Telescope Discovers Most Distant and Oldest Black Hole Ever Seen by Humans

The James Webb Space Telescope or JWST has just discovered the most distant and oldest black hole ever seen by humans.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — James Webb Space Telescope or JWST just discovered black hole the most distant and oldest ever seen by humans. This finding could be an important step for humans to understand the mechanisms that allow black holes to grow to such enormous sizes.

The black hole newly discovered by JWST is located in an old galaxy called GN-z11. GN-z11 is the most distant galaxy that has been identified by humans. This galaxy formed about 13.4 billion million years ago, or about 400 million years after the Big Bang.

The black hole discovered in the galaxy GN-z11 by JWST is six million times larger than the sun. This black hole also appears to be “eating” the material around it at a speed five times higher than the theoretical limit.

“It is still too early for the universe to see black holes of this size, so we have to consider other ways of formation (black holes),” explained the head of the research team from the Department of Physical Sciences at the University of Cambridge, Robert Maiolino, as reported by //Space/ / on Thursday (18/1/2024).

Maiolino explained that the very large size of the black hole in GN-z11 is probably related to the galaxy’s very old age. As is known, the earliest galaxies formed in the universe tended to be very rich in gas.

“So these galaxies are like a buffet for black holes,” said Maiolino.

The giant sizes of various black holes that formed when the universe was under a billion years old often intersect with current theories of black hole formation. The reason is, to reach a mass millions or even billions of times greater than the sun would take billions of years according to current theory.

“It was like seeing a family walking together with two 183 cm tall teenagers and two 183 cm tall toddlers,” added researcher John Reagan from Maynooth University.

When you see a family like this, people can’t help but wonder why a toddler can have such a tall body. This is also what scientists feel when they find very large black holes like the black hole in GN-z11.

One thing that scientists are quite sure of is that the existence of this giant black hole is responsible for the condition of GN-z11. As is known, the black hole “eats” the material around it. This condition is considered to be able to inhibit the growth of its own parent galaxy, namely GN-z11.
