James Webb Space Telescope Captures Stunning Images of Uranus’ Rings and Moons

Technologue.id, Jakarta – The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has captured images of Uranus’ rings. The image provides stunning details of planetary objects in the solar system.

This is the second image of Uranus taken by JWST this year. The first, released in April, is a two-color image consisting of imagery captured at infrared wavelengths of 1.4 and 3.0 microns.

This latest image adds additional wavelengths, specifically 2.1 and 4.6 microns, to provide a more complete picture of the seventh planet from the sun, quoted from Scientificamerican.

The new JWST image of Uranus not only shows the planet, but also the appearance of Uranus’ rings shining brightly in infrared light. JWST optics have even resolved the inner Zeta ring that researchers have struggled to understand.

The telescope developed by NASA captured a number of Uranus’ moons. Some of these lunar objects appear smaller and dimmer, including some moons embedded in rings. Meanwhile, a wider view shows the five large moons of Uranus, including Ariel, Miranda, Oberon, Titania and Umbriel.

The incredibly rich detail in these new images shows Uranus’ north polar area in the spotlight. Unlike the polar layers of Earth and Mars which are made of solid ice, Uranus is a gas world and its polar layers are in the form of aerosol halos that hang high in its atmosphere.
