Actor James Michael Tyler, who played Gunther, the cafeteria manager on the series “Friends,” died Sunday at age 59, US media reported.
He died at his home in Los Angeles after battling prostate cancer diagnosed in 2018, according to a representative.
“The world knew him as Gunther (the seventh ‘friend’), from the famous series Friends, but his loved ones knew him as an actor, musician, advocate of cancer awareness and dear husband,” said representative Toni Benson in a statement to the US media.
Her character appeared in about 150 episodes throughout the 10 seasons of the famous 1990s series, sarcastically directing Central Perk – the cafe the other characters went to – and pining for Rachel, played by Jennifer Aniston.
“Michael loved live music, cheering on his Clemson Tigers (football team), and he used to get into fun, unforeseen adventures. If you knew him once, you made a friend for life,” Benson said.

Tyler appeared in other roles on series such as “Scrubs”, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” and “Modern Music”.
Warner Bros TV tweeted that it mourned the loss of a “beloved actor and an integral part of our Friends family. Our thoughts go out to family, friends, colleagues and fans.”
Tyler announced on NBC’s “Today” in June that he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in September 2018, which spread through his bones. The cancer was discovered during a routine physical exam.
