Writer and director James Gunn reveals how he released Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to Marvel Studios and the process was very simple.
James Gunn release for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 it was so simple. The filmmaker tackled the MCU through 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which quickly became a hit. Given this, a sequel was a no-brainer, with Marvel Studios giving the director full creative control over his follow-up project.
Like its predecessor, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was a huge success for Marvel Studios, grossing more than $ 859 million worldwide, and has received generally positive feedback from the audience with special mentions for the film’s images. and the excellent performance of the cast. It’s arguably a more emotional film than the original blockbuster, with the follow-up addressing the different relationships the characters share. At the center of the narrative was Star-Lord meeting his biological father, Ego the Living Planet, played by Kurt Russell, who was apparently Gunn’s entire speech for Marvel Studios for the film.

While engaging with fans on his official Twitter account, Gunn was asked about his original plot for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Comparing it to his experience selling the idea for the first film, the director recalls that everything that told Marvel Studios executives was that Ego was going to be Star-Lord’s father, which was enough for them to give the sequel the green light. Read his full comment below:
My proposal for Guardians was a 19 page document on the images, a great sequence that I did in the storyboard (the Morag escape) and a presentation complete with images, references and actors. My proposal for 2 was basically: “His father is Ego the Living Planet!” Marvel said, “Great, come on!” https://t.co/bltLnybdpA

All that said, Gunn’s relationship with Marvel Studios hasn’t been a walk in the park. While he’s set to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 set to be released in 2023, he was briefly fired from his stint at Disney. After some of his nasty tweets from years ago were unearthed, the House of Mouse decided to randomly fire him, sparking an uproar among fans and his peers in the industry. This, thankfully, led him to make The DCEU’s The Suicide Squad, which will be released next year. However, Marvel Studios finally realized that Gunn is the main creative force behind the Guardians of the Galaxy and without him they risk the three-school going down. It’s also safe to imagine that finding a replacement director was difficult considering the situation.
It makes sense why the filmmaker didn’t have to exaggerate his story for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 like he did with the original movie. He proved capable of fulfilling the MCU and earned that creative freedom. Despite the brief conflict that led to his being fired and rehired, Kevin Feige and his team continue to rely on Gunn’s creativity, as evidenced by the recently announced Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. What lies beyond the three-school for these beloved heroes is unknown, but with Gunn potentially handling them in his final film, audiences are more confident that it will be a good mix of emotional and action-packed sequences like his previous MCU films.
